I recently read the Twisted Series by Ana Huang and I enjoyed each book of the series. This post and the preceeding three posts will be a series for the Twisted Love Series. I am going to start the series off with the first book of the series, Twisted Love. Each book of the series is interconnected, so you should read the books in chronicalogic order.

Twisted Love by Ana Huang follows the story of Alex and Ava. Alex is the best friend of Ava's brother, Josh. Josh has to leave for residency for a while so he asks his friend Alex to look after Ava. He wants Alex to check in on her and make sure she is not getting into any trouble with her friends. As the story progresses you learn the dark side of Alex and that he had alterior motives for befriending Josh and his family. The truth eventually gets out and it would almost seem that Alex will not be able to repair the damage he has done. Although he had alterior motives he did end up really enjoying Josh and Ava's company.

At the end of the book there is a bonus scene where Ava and Alex go apple picking. Ava was very proud of herself for convincing Alex to finally go apple picking and she gets a lot of apples. I thought it would be fun to make a recipe inspired by the apples that they picked.

I made apple dumplings because I thought it would be fun to make and something that Ava would make. These are not your typical dumplings though. Puff pastry is used as the dough for the dumplings. Then whole apples and caramel give the dumplings their sweet flavor while heavy whipping cream gives balance to the sweetness by providing creaminess to the dumplings.

Ingredients

  • 4 apples for cooking

  • Caramel Sauce

  • Frozen puff pastry thawed

  • Cinnamon Sugar

  • Heavy Whipping Cream

  • 1 egg, beaten

Directions

Step 1: Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease a 9x13in baking dish with butter.

Step 2: Peel and core the apples you are using. An apple corer would be ideal. You want the apples to stay whole, minus the core.

Step 3: Roll out the puff pastry. You are going to cut the dough into four squares large enough to wrap around each dumpling. I arranged the apples on the dough to help guide how big to make each square.

Step 4: Spread caramel sauce onto each square. You want to start in the middle of each square. Be sure to use soft caramel, such as a sauce. Hard caramel will just reharden after cooking. Place the apples on top of the caramel. Press the apples in gently but enough to ensure they are stuck onto the caramel.

Step 5: Fold up the corners of the dough so that they meet at the top of the apple and slightly tucked into the open core. Fill each core up about 2/3 of the way with the heavy cream. Brush the egg onto each dumpling. Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar.

Step 6: Transfer the dumplings to the greased baking dish. Bake in the oven for 40 minutes. enjoy them while they are still warm.
